Helpers shared by unstructured-grid formats: intermediate grid spacing and sphere nearest-point lookup.

SphereIndex

Nearest-point lookup on the unit sphere, so distances stay true near the poles. Queries farther than the mesh’s local spacing from every mesh point return None.
